for those of you that have a half-dozen or more mp3 playlists of christmas music like me, you might appreciate this website, Sir Shambling’s Soulful Christmas. downloadable mp3′s of awesome deep-soul christmas songs. i am adding it to my “XMAS funk” playlist now. it’s the one christmas playlist PositiveRoleModel actually likes. the others fall in either the “tolerable” category (“XMAS instrumental”) or the “i’ll smash your ipod if you don’t put something else on” category: “XMAS mellow,” for example. also, “XMAS in the stars.” this is the title of the 1978 star wars christmas album. it’s beyond excruciating. i’ve actually refrained form letting the children hear it, lest it crush their very souls. it’s a great companion to the dvd of the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special, which is known for two things: 1) introducing boba fett to the world in a short cartoon, and 2) being so amazingly, offensively cheezy that George Lucas has been quoted as saying “if i had the time and a hammer, i’d smash every bootleg copy of it.” PRM and i are watching it this weekend in bed with a big-ass plate of nachos. and beer. definitely beer. what’s not to love about making fun of our childhood heroes as they warble their way through christmas carols (at least one so coked out of her gourd that she can’t remember the lyrics, i hear!) it’s called “date night,” people. in a marriage of two hopeless romantics like us, the magic never wanes!
the rest of the sir shambling website is also pretty kick-ass. the guy has collected obscure 45s, and rather than post a complete catalog of the mp3s like a normal collectibles-as-heroin douchenozzle, he has posted only the ones that are awesome. i will be perusing it and beefing up my blues playlists after christmas.
